Parkinson’s Law~ “Work expands to fill the time needed for its completion,” quoted by Cyril Northcote Parkinson’s article for the Economist.
I think as Momprenuers, we can use this proverb to our advantage because we simply lack time.
If you’re like me, you have a household to run: cleaning, stocking, feeding the troops, organizing schedules, taking kids to and from activities, participating in school activities, and The Husband, you know the drill. It’s a busy life.
Starting a home based business requires time. The challenge becomes, where do we find it, and how do we use it to be successful?
When I started working from home my children were little, the only time I had been when the Littles slept. I would use nap times and when they went to bed at night to work on my projects. These snippets of time gave me the quiet that I need to be massively productive.
Another block of time you may be stingy to give up is watching T.V., Facebook trolling, or other non-essential activities. If you want to build something, you are going to have to give up something to gain the time. We don’t have the luxury of going into a quiet office to get some work done, it’s a revolving door of activities and finding time is necessary.
You’re going to like this one. Outsourcing. Consider buying or Co-oping some time. It could be a babysitter a couple of hours a week, a housekeeper, starting carpools for kid activities, someone to do grocery shopping. Maybe, you know another Momprenuer in the same boat, and you can help each other out. You can take the kids for the morning, and she can in the afternoons.
The idea is to become a Time-Ninja and begin snapping up bits of it as you go. A business builds in small increments. It’s not about carving out 8 hours to do something. It’s about finding an hour a day and consistently building from there.
