Were you told to build your home based business by talking to your friends, family and neighbors? They would all love what you are selling and they all need the opportunity?
This is a fairly common strategy in most home based businesses.
It is also a fairly common pit fall.
My suggestion is that you use this network as a referral source. Let me explain why.
Are your friends, realtors, bankers, clowns, pilots, doctors, teachers, brokers, moms, or architects?
Do they think their profession of choice or the goods they represent are the ideal choice for you?
Let us run a scenario. Your friend is a realtor.
Does she invite you to her home to watch a video on how great being a realtor is and how you should do it? Does she drop off magazines and flyers about going into Real Estate because its the best choice for you? Does she plaster advertisements and videos on being a realtor all over her FB wall? Does she repeatedly invite you to her home to socialize with other realtors so you can get more information on the profession? Does she act like you have not seen the light on how great real estate is and if she keeps talking about it you eventually will get it.
Exchange Realtor for your company name and you will quickly see what I mean.
Why are we trained to do this? It is ineffective and particularly for women will cause them to become socially isolated. I heard one woman say doing this had made her a member of the NFL Club, (no friends left club). Well that completely sucks!
Your friends, family and neighbors may know of someone interested in your product or service. Tell them what you do and ask for referrals. Some of them may be a good fit for what you have. All could be a referral resource for you.
Do share about your product or service.
Do let them know you are excited.
Do ask for their support and ideas on who it could be a fit for what you have and are doing.
Just like your friend in real estate does. If someone is about to buy a house, and is asking for a realtor, don’t you have someone you refer? This is exactly what you want your Friends, Family and Neighbors to do with you and your company, product or service. Refer business your way for the people who are the right match for what you have.
This will also help you maintain your close relationships with this inner circle.
In marketing you are looking for specific people. People who have a sweet spot for purchasing products like yours or they are entrepreneurial and are looking to start a new venture.
Building a home based business is done by finding the right people who match up with your product or company. This is not everyone. Begin sorting through people in your networks, looking for the matches. And always ask for a referral.
People are smart. They know what you are doing. They know you are looking for people to do it with. Telling them what you have and asking for a referral, takes them off the hook if it is not for them, helps them know if it is for them, and helps you keep up your relationships and grow your business.
Stop asking your friends, family and neighbors to join your MLM, ask them to refer people who are nuts about your kind of product or are entrepreneurial.
